...FRANCE Police arrested four suspected members of the Spanish Basque separatist group ETA, including its alleged military leader and chief of logistics, in the southwestern village of Lons. All four were placed under formal investigation on suspicion of having links with a terrorist organization. Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said ETA had been "decapitated" - a claim officials have made before. Surprise Setback GERMANY A Hamburg court unexpectedly released Moroccan 9/11 suspect Abdelghani Mzoudi from custody, after receiving new evidence the judge said might exonerate him of charges of belonging to the Hamburg-based al-Qaeda cell responsible for the attacks...
...impossible to overlook Angels' star power (Pacino and Streep's first onscreen pairing has been promoted like Godzilla vs. King Kong), and the celebrities do not disappoint. In multiple roles, Streep morphs effortlessly from ancient Orthodox rabbi to radical Jewish mom Rosenberg to Joe Pitt's mother Hannah. Only occasionally does Pacino slip into his scenery-chewing hooah mode with the eloquently cynical Cohn. And Thompson's angel is no cherub but a winged Old Testament monster of sexual heat and arrogance who proclaims, "My wrath is as fearsome as my countenance is splendid...
Really, though, Angels belongs to its less well-known stars. Kirk (see sidebar) is heartbreaking but fierce as he rages against the dying of the light, the fecklessness of his lover and the implacability of the angel's demands. And Jeffrey Wright--re-creating his Tony-winning roles as Belize, a Hispanic African-American transvestite, and Mr. Lies, a phantasm of Harper's drug reveries--is a model of nuance in parts that could have been mere sounding boards for Angels' agonized white folks...
This spirit has driven the best and the worst in American history, and so it does in Angels. The resonant words of the angel to Prior Walter--"The great work begins!"--could just as well replace "In God We Trust" on the dollar bill. The accomplishment of this dazzling, poetic and hopeful Angels in America is that it shows us how brave and reckless that American sentiment is, how fearsome and splendid...
...shouldn't have worried. Kirk delivers a performance that manages to be witty and self-assured as well as physically wrecked by the disease and emotionally sucker-punched by the Angel who has selected him to be her prophet. While Prior's situation is pitiable, Kirk never plays for easy sentiment...
