Last week the first recording of the concerto was issued on the Melodyia Angel label. The music should prove as much of a surprise to Shostakovich's fans as to his critics. Gone are the characteristic hard-edged rhythms, brittle orchestral sounds and prankish grotesqueries. SATIE: PIANO MUSIC, VOL. 3 (Angel). Debussy called Erik Satie "a sweet medieval musician who wandered into this century." He made a living playing the piano in the bars of Montmartre, drank with Duchamp, Man Ray and the other Dadaists, and wrote breezy little avant-garde compositions. With their whimsical titles (The War Song of the King of the Beans, Waltz of the Chocolate with Almonds) and seemingly random harmonies, they are surprisingly fresh after 50 years. ...SIEGFRIED IDYLL; HINDEMITH: TRAUERMUSIK (Angel). This is an intimate and unpretentious performance, largely due to the warmth that Daniel Barenboim elicits from the English Chamber Orchestra. The Siegfried Idyll sounds like what it was meant to be: a lullaby. The Schoenberg piece, one of the composer's very early works, and Hindemith's mourning music for viola and strings, have great spirit. Barenboim's first recording of modern works augurs well for the future...

A former Madrid newspaperman who did not become a priest until he was 53, Herrera was among the few Spanish churchmen to speak out publicly against corruption and injustice under Franco, steadfastly campaigned for greater freedom and better living conditions for his countrymen. Within his own bishopric of Málaga, he fought illiteracy with the construction of some 250 new elementary schools in the last 20 years...
