A pioneer suffragist, Socialist sister of Shipping Tycoon Sir Thomas Royden, she was launched as an active pulpiteer by Dr. Joseph Fort Newton, who in 1917 made her his assistant at London's City Temple, "Cathedral of British Nonconformity."
