...distinguished himself as a brilliant thinker, magnetic speaker or prophetic leader, like his predecessor, Dr. William Temple. His pipe-smoking good humor and gregariousness have made him a delight to get along with ("Quarreling with him is impossible," says one of his canons). He administered the Anglican Church with the same efficiency he once showed as headmaster of Repton, one of Britain's best schools; and his clergy, though woefully underpaid, is better off than when he took office. But he failed to inspire the majority of Anglicans who are only nominal Christians with new or urgent faith...

Except for two factors, the Fisher reign would be unlikely to ripple the flow of ecclesiastical history. One is his dedication to the ecumenical movement. Once, when the Anglican Assembly was dragging its feet about voting money to the British Council of Churches, he said: "If I had to choose between being Archbishop of Canterbury and president of the British Council of Churches, I'd choose the presidency." He has been one of the most active leaders of the World Council of Churches, and also helped shepherd the pioneering Church of South India into being despite the complicated theological...

Also among those voting were the three Dutch Reformed Churches, at least some of whose representatives backed it. Later the Dutch Reformed Churches found it necessary to clarify their stand. The smallest of the three churches-Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk with over 200,000 members-rejected the resolution and stood pat for total segregation. ...exact opposite might prove to be true. The Anglican and the Dutch Reformed Churches find themselves drawn together in mutual concern, as they have not been since Anglican Archbishop Joost de Blank of Capetown threatened to resign from the World Council of Churches if the Dutch Reformed Churches did not mend their racial ways. At the close of the World Council consultation, Archbishop de Blank rose and begged forgiveness from the Dutch Reformed Church men for any hurt he might previously have caused in his impassioned campaigning. Promptly and warmly they forgave him. Says Alan Paton: "The archbishop...

After King Henry VIII broke with Rome, the church at Kells was surrendered to the Crown, but the book somehow got into the hands of a Dubliner named Gerald Plunket, who is believed to have been a distant relative of the last abbot. Later it was acquired by Anglican Bishop James Ussher, commissioned by James I to collect the historic treasures of the church. On Aug. 24, 1621, the good bishop duly noted that he had "reckoned the leaves of the booke and found them to be in number 344." When Ussher died, the manuscript was turned over to Trinity...
