...legal, the filmmakers believe it is “still so stigmatized that it’s never discussed in polite company.” “Speak Out: I Had an Abortion” aims to change that. This cute little project is a bit reminiscent of angst-ridden teenagers who want nothing more than to enact societal change and to be part of a movement. Sadly, “Speak Out” has arrived on the scene a bit late. The statistics on abortion rates, which the filmmakers themselves agree upon, would suggest that this supposed...

...YouTube link for Tegan and Sara’s video for “The Con.” The meek opening chords, when coupled with successive shots of a nervously-jiggling, Converse-clad foot, followed by Tegan draped melancholically on a therapist’s couch, set the angst factor rather high. The ashy tones and urban feel just ooze somberness. The girls betray just enough tongue-in-cheek sensibility, however, that we’re willing to stomach some lonesome bed-writhing. The story is simple and possibly symbolic (more on that later). Sara goes on a rescue...

...sound like the current presidential campaign, but the year was 1800 and the beleaguered candidate was Thomas Jefferson. Four years earlier, he had lost the presidency to John Adams in an election fraught with religious angst. Jacobin revolutionaries had taken over France, closed its churches and threatened to export their reign of terror. Supporters of Adams' Federalist Party linked Jefferson to the French secularists through his defense of revolutionary France and support for the separation of church and state. Adams, in contrast, they argued, was a man of God who opposed radical French ideas, and under his rule America...

...serious schtick. The album is not fun, unapologetically poppy, or silly by any stretch of the imagination. Out of the 17 songs on the album, 12 are nauseatingly earnest slow songs. “Unbreakable” clearly demonstrates that an entire album of synthesized boy band angst is just not a pretty listen. The Backstreet Boys didn’t seem to get the memo that they’re an aging boy band, not a collection of inspired musical artists. They appear to be operating under the premise that they are, in fact, still in their mid-twenties...

It’s either your favorite movie, or it used to be until you heard that it was everyone else’s. Richard Kelly’s “Donnie Darko” is a cult movie with a huge following. Centered on teenage angst, wormholes, and a big scary bunny, “Donnie Darko” remains the premiere sci-fi teen-epic of the decade, and its popularity has waned little since its release in 2001. A fair amount of debate surrounds the movie, as the storyline depicted therein reads nebulously at best. Purists...
