...Americans rang in the New Year last week, it was an oddly kaleidoscopic moment. Bostonians had slogged through the snowiest December since 1947, and the traffic-snarling snowfalls gave the angular shapes of the town houses on Commonwealth Avenue a specially softened calm. Houston's golf courses were flecked with executives basking in record warm temperatures. Nippy winds scoured clean the usually smoggy Los Angeles basin, offering Southern Californians breathtaking panoramas that they rarely see. The vagaries of the weather matched the novelty of the national mood, as Americans took stock of 1970 and looked to the year ahead...
Died. Johannes Urzidil, 74, Prague-born writer, close friend and disciple of Franz Kafka, best known for There Goes Kafka, in which he explained that his mentor's tense angular sketches were not mere doodles, as many critics thought, but graphic expressions of individuality lost in authoritarian bureaucracy; of a stroke; in Rome...
Mather House is the future. Stone cold, fluorescent, angular, it juts into our eyes like a stiletto from the next century. Its proportions are so gargantuan that even an unwilling observer is thrown into the role of a tiny mannequin in an architect's scale model. Some people claim that architecture like this requires a new grammar of response; I think instead that Mather House almost demands that we abandon our way of seeing...
...promising newcomer to the VW line is the five-passenger K-70, which will make its debut at the Paris auto show this week. The K70 represents a radical departure in VW's diversification drive. It has angular lines and a water-cooled, front-end engine instead of the usual rear-end, air-cooled one. Already praised by Continental critics, the K70 will go on sale in Germany in November. Company chiefs contend that the K70 will not be brought to America until it has an automatic gearshift, which VW feels is imperative in this hotly contested U.S. market...
...designed a poplar-lined road that traces an almost complete circle from a cluster of old buildings to the outermost playing fields and back again. Then he intercepted the circle with five new academic buildings (a student center, lecture hall, library, administration building and arts center) set along an angular pedestrian "spine." These new buildings gave personality and vigor to the college and landscape, thus resolving Fredonia's great problem of formless anonymity. Moreover, they never turn their backs on their older neighbors; rather the new honor and upgrade the old. It is an architecture of good manners...
