...same year? Time could have done Ghana's tourism industry a great favor by including photographs of some of the castles, beautiful sandy beaches and Lake Volta. I would like to have seen mention of some of the country's personalities, like former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and President John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor. Columnist Joe Klein's admiration for outgoing U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan was misplaced and misguided [Dec. 25, 2006--Jan. 1, 2007]. Annan's 10 years at the U.N. saw the organization's effectiveness and reputation drop to new lows. The list of scandals, misappropriations and misdeeds was surpassed only by the opportunities missed. Ten years ago, I supported the U.N. mission. Now, owing largely to Annan's pathetic leadership, I no longer support the U.S.'s role in the U.N. ...Kofi Annan's 10 years at the United Nations were not a "triumph of high achievement," but the Secretary-General was a force for civility throughout. His work-and the efforts of the U.N. inspection teams?in the months leading up to the Iraq war deserves special mention.
