Penn tied defending champion Harvard for first place in the 40th annual Intercollegiate Squash Championships at Annapolis, Md., yesterday. Both the Crimson and the Quakers tallied 22 points. Host Navy was third in the 22-team field with 18 points.
Harvard's unbeaten racquetmen, fresh off an impressive win over Yale, 9-0, and a squeaker with Penn, 5-4, go into the National Invitational Squash tourney at Annapolis this weekend as favorites.
The win over Yale means that the Crimson will enter this weekend's tournament at Annapolis as the top seed and favored to repeat also as national six-man champs.
Barnaby said he wants badly to retain the national championship at Navy this weekend. "I got a trunkful of silver last year at Annapolis; I sure hope I can keep it all here," he said.
With a victory today, Harvard (9-0; 4-0 in the Ivy League) would win the national and Ivy League nine-man titles, and would go into this weekend's national six-man team tournament at Annapolis in a dominating position.
