...spread the blame by giving up Barbour? After all, he makes big bucks--$50,000 a month--fronting for the industry. But fingering Barbour would force the two leaders to choose between pleading stupidity (We were tricked into it) or venality. And neither Lott nor Gingrich is inclined to annoy tobacco's top ambassador in Washington, who controls thousands if not millions of dollars in political contributions. In the past 18 months, Republicans have pocketed $1.9 million from tobacco. (Democrats got $300,000.) Barbour makes Roger Tamraz, the star of last week's campaign-finance hearings, look like a sucker...
...Shlemiel' and carries the musical to success. Grandmothers and small children alike stomp their feet and clap their hands with enthusiasm-and the entire audience joins the players in a sort of joyous festival. Because everyone has come to enjoy the production, the goofiness of 'Shlemiel' doesn't annoy such a sympathetic crowd. Its silliness and the exhaustion of one-liners in a skewed way adds to the twisted or morbid fascination that it evokes...

Tucker's wailing vibrato will annoy some listeners (Brownstein's voice is a bit calmer), but it's an apt vehicle to convey the trio's anarchic passion. Several of the tunes are old-fashioned paeans to rock, including the stomping Words and Guitar. But for Sleater-Kinney, rock is more than keg-party entertainment...
...days later she responded to my e-mail, asking me what we would be meeting about and telling me that she could not respond to my second question until she knew what we would be meeting about. Her stonewalling was beginning to annoy me. I wrote back with a list of questions I had concerning the Ad Board, its processes and the possibility of appeal. I then, once again, politely asked her to tell me before we met what these unknown circumstances were so I could look into them. Her reply to this message was terse and again begged...
