Harvard received an A- on the annual College Sustainability Report Card for the fourth year running, outpacing its Ivy League peers on such measures of greenness as "administration," "investment priorities," and "shareholder engagement." The report, first published in 2007 by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, aims to identify universities that have embraced the sustainability ethos outside the classroom. Under its grading scheme, Harvard hasn't improved much, unlike some of the Ivies—but neither has it gotten worse at going green. We're looking at you, Columbia. ...country that still hasn't figured out an effective strategy for water management. In the northwest alone, the water table is falling by about 1.6 inches per year, according to the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) mission. At least half of India's precipitation comes from the annual monsoon rains, and as they become increasingly diminished and unpredictable, the country faces an imminent threat of extreme water shortages. Changing rainfall patterns aren't the only climate- change effect threatening India's water supply: Himalayan glaciers - the source for the many Indian rivers such as the Ganges - are melting...

The policy would work similarly to a traditional pension in that it would provide a guaranteed monthly check equal to about a quarter of your final pay, from when you quit working until you die. Together with the recession's effects, these factors contributed to 3.7% fewer domestic and international air passengers on U.S. airlines in 2008 than 2007. This was the first annual decrease since 2002 and is continuing into...
...like most head-scratchers right now, Lepri isn't likely anytime soon to learn how the Nobel committee came to its decision - or precisely why. For all the attention focused on its annual award, the Nobel committee is a cloistered, enigmatic operation, as hard to read as the Soviet Politburo. While its website - the only source of information the organization provides to outsiders - broadly explains the nominating and selection process, it does little to illuminate inscrutable details like what criteria defines the eventual winner, and just who weighs in on the choice. Identities of non-winning candidates - and those...
