...Qasab, barely five feet tall but with powerful shoulders under his loose, long sleeved t-shirt, appeared in court this morning with two other co-accused, Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin, inside the Arthur Road jail complex. Qasab, a Pakistani national, was the only surviving suspect from the Nov. 26 attacks on Mumbai that killed about 170 people; Ansari and Sabahuddin, who are Indian, were arrested separately and are accused of helping to plan the attacks. ...before making an approach. With any luck, Ahmadinejad will lose - perhaps to his more moderate predecessor, Mohammed Khatami, who has a history of reaching out to the West. Even if Ahmadinejad is re-elected, Khatami's mere entry into the fray may force him to open up, says Ali Ansari, an Iran expert at London's Chatham House, a foreign policy think tank. He had had discussions "with all the people you'd expect" in the pantheon of U.S. finance regarding a possible investment from his fund, he told TIME. Wisely, it turns out, he told all of them no - and then...
...Monday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced a $1 million prize for the commercial development of in vitro meat—meat that is grown from stem cells in a laboratory. Of course, offering prize money to entice entrepreneurs is not a novel idea. The Ansari X prize, eventually awarded to Space Ship One, provided $10 million to develop private space flight. The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded prizes to develop autonomous ground vehicles. Even Google has offered a $30 million Lunar X prize for the first privately funded...
