...Vocal coach Debra Byrd, musical director Michael Orland and co-executive producer Nigel Lythgoe felt the song didn't showcase her well enough. "I'm just not sure what you'll gain from singing it," said Lythgoe. Instead, Byrd handed Barrino Holding Out for a Hero, the Bonnie Tyler anthem from Footloose. "That's the kind of song that gets you votes," said Lythgoe. It's easy to see why they felt that way: the song is dramatic, with big, brassy notes. It's also a gooey slick of '80s cheese whose histrionics aren't well suited to Barrino...

...sales conference of ad men, brand managers and TV affiliate executives. It was one of the sadder things I've ever seen, and yet it was somehow appropriate. They closed with "Won't Get Fooled Again" - the "CSI: Miami" theme - which, for its time (1971), was an unusually conservative anthem, in that its message was, like CBS's, that revolutionary change isn't necessarily good. The plan is minutely detailed, providing the colors of a new flag and even the score of a new national anthem (you can listen to it at www.cyprus-un-plan.org). U.N. negotiators had hoped that this time pressure from the E.U. - and the fact that Turkey wants to join - would get results where previous efforts have failed. Turkey lifted its historical objection to a deal under the country's new Prime Minister, Recep...

Much has been made of the song “Anthem for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl,” the so-called standout track from YFIIP. While pleasing the crowd, many of whom seemed to have only a passing acquaintance with the other songs (even though almost all were from the same album), the song, far from living up to its title, quickly turned into a smug drone. Singer Emily Haines (one of four in the band) does indeed possess a beautiful voice, but burying it under layers of cutesy effects and having her repeat the same...

...unity and threatening to stall the political process altogether. A Sunni council member said the attacks had totally altered "sensitivities." First the constitution-signing ceremony was put off for three days of mourning. Then on Friday evening, as a sextet from the National Symphony Orchestra tuned up the national anthem and accompanied children from Baghdad's School of Music and Ballet, the landmark agreement fell apart. For the third time since November, the powerful Ayatullah Sistani spoiled Washington's plans. Each time his purpose seemed to be to ensure that the Shi'ites would emerge as Iraq's dominant leaders...
