...spectacle of women trying to prove that anatomy is not destiny and ?temporarily, at least, turning into cavepersons on the mixed-doubles courts as a result?may be either good news or bad in the long run. One who thinks cutthroat competition for women is bad is Anthropologist Margaret Mead. She admits that if women turn their backs on the home and childbearing, they may need sport to give them confidence in their bodies, as men have done since the beginnings of society. But she thinks Americans are terrible sports ("We're always saying, 'Kill the umpire...
...dictatorial regime of Alfredo Stroessner this year reportedly launched a new wave of political arrests involving several hundred people; it is the third such wave since late 1974. Witnesses to conditions in Paraguay's primitive jails claim that detainees are regularly tortured. One recent victim was internationally known Anthropologist Miguel Chase Sardi, who was released in June after seven months in prison. Chase Sardi says he was drugged, beaten and dipped upside down in water to the point where his hearing may have been permanently damaged. Other methods of torture include electric shock, the extraction of fingernails and forcing...
Superhumans? Subhumans? Figments of a science-fiction writer's imagination? In fact, the Dani are living quite nicely, thank you, in the Grand Valley of West Irian (formerly West New Guinea), where they were studied for 2½ years by Karl Heider, an anthropologist from the University of South Carolina. Heider, who has taught at Harvard, Brown and Stanford, describes the abstemious sexual behavior of the 5,000-member tribe in the current issue of Man, the journal of Britain's Royal Anthropological Institute. He reports finding no strong sanctions against sexual activity or any other ready explanation...
...America's newest fashionable guru. With 62 centers in North America besides the Catskills ashram, he has attracted more than 20,000 devotees since his arrival in 1974. He has also received respectful visits from such celebrities as California Governor Jerry Brown, Singers James Taylor and Carly Simon, Anthropologist Carlos Castaneda and Astronaut Edgar Mitchell. At home in India, too, he has a considerable following. There are centers of his disciples all over the subcontinent. He will return there this fall in a chartered Air India 747, together with 400 American devotees and a pet bull terrier. But this...
Selfish Oafs. Female sexologists agree with some, if not all of Caletti's findings. Anthropologist Gabriella Parca calls the new study "antiscientific" because it is limited to the Veneto region. "In the Veneto there is much more sexual freedom than in Sicily or Sardinia," she points out. "It is as though Kinsey had conducted his national study only in New York." But Parca and many other women agree with Caletti's debunking of the Latin lover myth. Parca characterized Italian men in her book The Sultans, published eleven years ago, as selfish, insensitive oafs. Now engaged in preparing...
