During the Cold War, the very term "democratic" was simply a synonym for anticommunist - Suharto, Mobutu, Generals Diem and Pinochet, the medieval Islamists who fought the Soviets in Afghanistan and many other dodgy candidates were all in the "democratic" camp, remember.
