...copied by many even as he outgrew and denounced it. His last picture, The Boss of It All, was a comedy with a sour taste, so you can't be sure that Antichrist is as dead-serious as it appears. Maybe the movie is a big deadpan joke, an antic-hrist. What's certain is that serious film people on several continents will be talking about von Trier's latest affront, defending or deriding it, finding it hard to ignore. Short of an flat-out masterpiece, what more can movies offer...

...Annenberg, a quiet night to end the week, complete with mediocre food and...upperclassmen crashers? Oh wait, it's just Eleganza, yet another student group shamelessly infiltrating the sacred space in order to promote an upcoming event. But what was likely intended to be a groundbreaking-ly exciting antic fell flat in front of the disinterested freshmen. After waiting 11 minutes past their intended go-time of 6 PM in anticipation of more viewers, the Eleganzans lost their surprise factor and were hardly a sensational sweep. Baby Mama Directed by Michael McCullers; rated PG 13; out Sept. 9 Tina Fey's put-upon charm bounces so winningly off Amy Poehler's antic humor that this tale of a career woman and the surrogate she engages becomes less chick flick and more buddy movie with babies. Plus, the alternate ending is way cuter than the original...

Of course, he was touched by genius and the people who make movies like Get Smart are touched by no more than the unwise desire to spend someone else's money on special effects that are inherently antithetical to the antic. The phrase someone ought to be whispering in their ears is "Less is more." It's a concept that might have been catnip to a superb minimalist like Steve Carell...
