...rise in the price of imported oil coming out of the OPEC meeting in Geneva is also going to hurt Carter's struggling anti-inflation program. The President invited Democratic congressional leaders to a White House breakfast last week and talked worriedly about the economy. Carter confessed to the Congressmen that he was not very hopeful about slowing inflation. The reason: the U.S. economy is showing such unexpected strength that the recession predicted for this year by many economists may not occur until later. Presidential aides cited figures indicating that the economy grew at a robust annual rate...

Barre's attempts to follow the West German example have provoked an alarming resurgence of anti-German rhetoric. Michel Debre, who served as De Gaulle's Premier from 1959 to 1962, blamed France's economic troubles on the European Community, which is "too easily manipulated by our German competitors−I say competitors, not partners." The Communists have been even more demagogic. "What the Germans couldn't get in 1914 and 1939 they are conquering today," complained Jean Gillet, a member of the Communist-dominated CGT union...

Though the Carter Administration preaches austerity in pay raises as part of its anti-inflation gospel, some state and local legislators have been covering their ears and awarding themselves and other public employees hefty boosts. The irony is that these increases, which sometimes range well above the Government's voluntary guidelines limit of 7%, are made possible because of the rich flow of federal aid to states and localities. In many cases, the money for the raises is available because federal largesse pays for programs that the legislatures would otherwise have to fund. Government programs will this year enrich...

Reflecting the ideological pressure of Carter's anti-Soviet "human rights" crusade, not only liberals but self-proclaimed "radicals" equate China's invasion of Vietnam with Vietnam's military conflict with Cambodia. For liberals and pacifists all invasions are equal. Not so for Marxists What is key for usin an analysis of the class forces involved. We are partisans of the proletariat and defend their interests against those of the bourgeoisie. As Trotskyists, we understand that what is at the root of the conflict between Vietnam and Cambodia is the rival nationalism inherent in all Stalinist bureaucracies. The Stalinist "theory...

...Trotskyist analysis of the Soviet Union and the other deformed workers states is that the economic gains of the anti-capitalist revolutions remain intact; i.e. there is no bourgeoisie, private property has been collectivized and there is a planned economy. But the self-serving Stalinist bureaucracies have politically expropriated the working class by excluding the most elementary expression of proletarian democracy: workers soviets. We give no support to one Stalinist regime over another but call for political revolution against the bureaucracies whose class-collaborationist policies sabotage the very existence of the collective property forms upon which their states rest...
