...York Times (Democratic) last week and deposed that of 289 inquiries he made among his customers, only seven revealed votes for Nominee Smith. Said Salesman Quincy: "Thirty-one of my customers have shown me cancelled checks they have contributed to the Republican National Committee. Seven . . . contributed to the Anti-Saloon League...
...strange anomaly, provides a breathing spell. Twenty-five years of Stadium tradition are rounded out in this afternoon's Dartmouth gridiron appearance. Athletics were a casual pastime when the men from Hanover first came to Cambridge; it was that long ago. And yet, such is the effect of partial anti-climax, popular and newspaper hysteria are at an ultimate low ebb. Cadets and campaigners, Dempseys and dirigibles have harrowed the public. For the only time in recent memory, there is a possibility that the fifty few thousand who attend the game will be composed of those who actually are interested...
Arkansas follows Tennessee on the monkey-trial subject. Apparently a proposed anti-evolution teaching law is to be voted on there next month. But at Little Rock a day or so ago, Charles Smith, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Atheism, agitating against that law, was arrested for violating a city ordinance prohibiting the use of the name of the diety except in "veneration or worship". He was tried on the different charge of disturbing the peace, and fined for distributing printed material "calculated to provoke a breach of the peace". Rather than pay the fine...
...degree of intolerance, the unscientific absolutist dictatorship of religious feeling, of the legislators and people of Tennessee in the Scopes Trial. It was an example of unassailable belief which seemed inconceivable in this United States of today; and hopefully it was thought confined to Tennessee. A similar anti-evolution bill failed of passage in Florida. But Arkansas has gone further than to place an anti-evolution bill on the ballot for referendum. The municipal government of Little Rock has given unimpeachable evidence that agitation against such a measure is not there the inalienable right of any citizen of the United...
PROHIBITION No Beverage Poisoning is a grim, sordid phase of Prohibition. The most rabid anti-salooner would find it hard to vilify a lawbreaker who went shrieking to death with poison scourging his entrails. Last week an epidemic of poison liquor deaths struck Manhattan. John Becak, wagon driver for the Morgue, said he never had such a busy week. During three days 33 persons succumbed. Most of the deaths were caused by wood alcohol. Most of them occurred on the lower east side waterfront. The city police arrested purveyors of a decoction known as "smoke" which sells...
