...Skin Of Our Teeth, as Stephen Nightingale directs it at Lowell House, carries off Wilder's con game with only a few pratfalls. The play is a loosely conceived Everyman telling the never-ending story of Mr. George Antrobus (Stuart Beck), his wife (Mary Belle Felten-stein), and two kids (John Sansone and Jody Adams). Wilder places this New Jersey family in the Ice Age, the flood, and the end of World War II (which wasn't over in 1942), revelling in anachronism and exploded convention...

Electric Clouds. This charade has been convulsing London audiences for three months. Its co-authors are Actor-Writers John Antrobus and Terence A.P.S. ("Spike") Milligan. Spike climbed Mount Everest from the inside on BBC radio's Goon Show. He also appeared in The Running, Jumping, and Standing Still Film, the craziest movie short ever made...

...Antrobus, educated at Sandhurst, is the sensible partner who takes on the practical problems of the production, such as settling with the unions the question of whether the parrot is an actor or a prop. Milligan, a 45-year-old Irishman born in India, has his head in electric clouds. "It's the end of the bike," he glooms. "Fin de cycle." He has lots of other ideas about life after World War III-selling plots of sea, for example, because land is so expensive. The phone rings on his desk -and rings and rings and rings...

...September after only 23 performances. With hardly a line deleted or dinosaur added, Wilder's drama is in a sense better than it was 13 years ago. His tearfully laughable story of mankind, allegorically and often outlandishly larded into the daily life of Mr. and Mrs. George Antrobus of Excelsior, N.J.. is just the same. What has changed, in hot war and cold, is the audience. Today's playgoers, themselves survivors of some close shaves, can sympathize more feelingly, even in the shadow of a mushroom cloud, with generic George Antrobus as he survives not only...

...Flood. After such a quiet play, Wilder's rambunctious The Skin of Our Teeth proved to be a jolt-so much so that some 75 backers promptly backed away. It was a sort of Hellzapoppin with brains, the story of Everyman (Mr. Antrobus) and the whole human race. Its action spread over 5,000 years, took in the Flood, the Ice Age and Armageddon. "Our Town" says Wilder, "is the life of the family seen from a telescope five miles away. The Skin of Our Teeth is the destiny of the whole human group seen from a telescope...
