...Dyck covered a lot of territory in his short life. He was Rubens' most gifted assistant in Antwerp, and his early ability to reproduce the style of his idol has led to prolonged squabbles over the attribution of some of his early paintings. What they leave no doubt of is Van Dyck's precocity, the speed with which he metabolized the lessons of his master. In 1620, when he was only 21, he was hired by King James I as a court painter in London. A year later he was in Genoa, painting its nobles and dignitaries, making study trips...

...Dyck loved the stuff of the world -- the shimmer and exact texture of fabrics (he was, after all, the son of a silk merchant in Antwerp), the brightness of flesh or the passing melancholy that settles on a face, the layering of vapor and light in the sky, the sheen of armor. In this sense of lavishness he was, of course, very much Titian's heir, and it is wonderful to see how much pictorial interest he could discover in inert substances -- particularly the brocades and velvets worn by his sitters -- in the course of translating them into patches...

...cartel leaders are apparently investing in precious gems. "Cash is a pain," says a DEA official. "It's bulky if you move it, traceable if you bank it, and it mildews if you bury it." Which may explain why Colombians have been reported buying up jewels -- principally diamonds -- in Antwerp, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. U.S. agents don't think these buyers are Christmas shopping. "You can transport millions of dollars' worth of diamonds in your back pocket," says an investigator. Furthermore, diamonds don't rot when stored in the underground caches favored by Colombian dons...

Just like show biz, fashion thrives on outlandish happenings, which seem to come naturally to Margiela. His clothes are anything but gaudy, however, reflecting instead the dour severities of northern Belgium, where he grew up. He is one of several young designers who have emerged from Antwerp's Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts and who adapt menswear for women. Margiela likes to make new clothes look lived in. Although a scrupulous tailor, he sews dark seams at the knees of trousers to resemble a crease. Like everyone else, he goes for thigh-high boots, but his are real fishing gear...

Other West German press reports led to Joseph Gedopt, 44, managing director of an Antwerp shipping company named Cross Link Group. Last week, acting on information supplied by West German customs officials, Belgian authorities arrested Gedopt for falsifying bills of lading on a shipment of Imhausen equipment that left Germany addressed to Pen-Tsao in Hong Kong but was later diverted to Libya through Antwerp. Gedopt reportedly admitted making many such diversions, for Imhausen and other companies, but denied knowing that any shipments he handled had been destined for a chemical-weapons facility...
