Certainly Harvard believes that it isn't asking Jewish students to sacrifice that much. After all, electric menorahs are available and recommended, and Christian students also have to forego lighted Advent wreaths. Admittedly, that's annoying for them, but how many were actually planning to have Advent wreaths anyway? In contrast, the menorah is a necessary possession of practicing Jews. When Hannukah originated over 2,100 years ago, the Israelites miraculously annihilated the armies of Antiochus and then miraculously had enough pure oil to keep the menorah in the otherwise destroyed Temple burning for eight days. Eight days later, fresh off the 26-hour fast of Yom Kippur, I, like every other Jewish first-year, had to shove down my break-the-fast meal and then rush off to a required Yard meeting that started a half-hour late anyway. Now, for the third time this year, Harvard is restricting how I celebrate a Jewish holiday...
...Well, the stations here are so...you've got your rock station, you've got your R&B stations, you've got your hip-hop stations... I tend not to listen. I don't listen a lot to the radio anyway. I mean, I listen to Radio Three at home, which is a classical music station, because if you spend all your life making loud rock music, you get home and you want something a bit easier on your ears...
Further, to call Bonfire an "excessive, unnecessary waste of natural resources" is far from correct as well. Alumni or citizens of College Station usually give up part of their land that they want to be deforested, and so these trees would have been cleared anyway. As for the burning of a 55 foot high stack of logs, the ecological damage is a tiny fraction of the damage done in a few hours by the refineries and chemical companies along the South coast of Texas, and I do not think we should get rid of those either...
...what do investment bankers do, anyway? The long hours and fat paychecks are legendary. But the vast majority of seniors who wander into the recruitment fair each fall probably have no idea how they'll actually end up spending all those hours. Is this productive, meaningful work, as exciting and intriguing as the brochures claim? Or just old-fashioned drudgery at a hundred hours a week? Is the young analyst an empowered executive or simply a glorified wage slave...
