DIED. GEORGE C. SCOTT, 71, raspy-voiced, imperious actor whose roles in The Hustler and Dr. Strangelove earned him Academy Award nominations, and who won and then declined an Oscar for Patton; of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm; at his home in Los Angeles. He won three Emmys and was nominated for four Tonys, but Scott's personal life was messy. He was married five times, twice to actress Colleen Dewhurst. He attributed his heavy drinking habits to a four-year stint digging graves for the Marines in Arlington National Cemetery. "I became an actor," he once said, "to escape...
...have found a powerful predictor of heart disease, the health problem with the highest mortality rate in the nation. A study of 5,621 men and women over 65 published in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine reveals that the presence of a benign condition known as aortic valve sclerosis may be associated with a 50 percent higher risk of death from heart disease. The finding is significant because the condition, a hardening or thickening of a tiny heart valve, ?is incredibly common among the elderly,? says TIME medical columnist Christine Gorman. About a quarter of persons over...
Doctors have known for a while that a more severe condition, aortic valve stenosis, can cause problems because it prevents the valve from closing properly. ?But sclerosis was thought to be benign because it does not impede the closing of the valve,? says Gorman. The new findings will now prompt further study to determine more precisely why there appears to be an association between sclerosis and heart disease fatalities. It will also prompt doctors to monitor patients with the condition more closely. The new findings, if borne out by further research, could add a potent new tool in the battle...
Since the Englewood program began in 1994, it has performed more than 1,500 bloodless procedures, twice that of any other institution. Most of them have been major operations that usually involve extensive blood loss and transfusions: liver resections, hip replacements, abdominal aortic aneurysms, hysterectomies and brain surgery. "From a medical point of view, there are no technical barriers to performing bloodless surgeries," says Dr. Sharo Raissi, a cardiac surgeon at Brotman Medical Center, one of a dozen hospitals in Los Angeles that offer such services. "There is no limit as to what can be done for patients, from open...
Pumping iron he could do. Pumping blood was another matter. Not long after Maria Shriver was discharged from the hospital (she had hyperemesis, a pregnancy-related ailment), her hubby ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER checked himself in for voluntary heart surgery. He had a congenital defect in his aortic valve--the valve that stops blood from going back into the heart. Don't fret about those pecs, though. He's fine, and doctors say the scar will be barely noticeable...
