What do all these polls mean anyway, when CBS, AP and UPI can come up with different answers? After all, there is no sampling error--they are polling all 1333 delegates. And why the small shifts every day? It is because one day, a poor defenseless woman delegate is cornered by three aggressive Nixon aides and practically battered into switching her allegiance. By the next day, Rockefeller would have heard about this, and his men would go and batter her back. In between, she may tell AP she favors Nixon, UPI she favors Rockefeller, and CBS she's uncommitted...

...Class of '68 has no one symbol. But Brian Weiss of U.C.L.A., who ap pears on this week's TIME cover, pointedly conveys many of its new mold characteristics, opinions and attitudes. His voice is amplified more loudly than most since it is reflected in the Daily Bruin (circ. 18,000); Weiss has made such an impact as editor of the paper that many call it the Daily Brian. Weiss allows that he has "always been a wise-ass ? only my vocabulary has improved." He has called California Governor Ronald Reagan "a liar" for manipulating university financial figures...

Actually, his later novels, notably Lolita and Pale Fire, are far more elaborate. Even Laughter in the Dark (originally published in 1932 as Camera obscurd), which in setting, plot and theme strongly resembles King, Queen, Knave, is more intricately patterned. But King, Queen, Knave is tricky enough-the ap-pearance-and-reality theme as applied to the eternal love triangle. In Nabokov's idiosyncratic geometry, all three angles are obtuse: Kurt Dreyer, fiftyish, owner of a prosperous department store, is suffused with a jocular egomania; Martha, his 34-year-old wife, beautiful and sybaritic, is dimmed by compulsively romantic...
