...Judd Apatow is working much harder on this article than I am. He wants to meet at 8 a.m., suggests six different events I can accompany him to and sends me more e-mails checking on my progress than my editor does. The two-minute video interview that I promised TIME.com turns into Apatow taking my camera, directing me for 15 minutes and editing it himself. It's not entirely surprising - after all, I'm lazy - but it helps explain how Apatow has become the most influential person making comedy in Hollywood. Partly it's that he's funny...

...speak in the past tense, since Heigl comes near to emptying her reserves of goodwill with a disastrous new concoction called The Ugly Truth. In its wan attempt to be raunchy, the picture fails where Judd Apatow has usually succeeded; written by three women, this is a girl's mistaken idea of an R-rated comedy. Heigl, as star and executive producer, doesn't do herself any favors either. She spends virtually the entire movie getting mocked up and knocked out. (See TIME's review of (500) Days of Summer...

...three installments of The Lord of the Rings were nominated, and the last one won; but no episode of the Harry Potter series has been recognized, though they reside in popularity and quality just below the Tolkien trio. Judd Apatow has created his own genre, reviving comedy with his species of bromance; should that not have got some official nod? I might've slit my wrists if Mamma Mia! had been nominated last year, or Twilight. But why not give notice to a wider range of movies...

...other words, revels in being the outsider, the underdog, the geek. (Jay's signature bit, on the other hand, was "Jaywalking," where he went on the street to ask people news and history questions and made them look ridiculous.) This is both a defining Gen X trait - think Judd Apatow's movies and Beck's "Loser" - and a sensibility suited to the 12:30 p.m. Late Night, the slacker sibling to The Tonight Show. Some doubters wonder if that can translate to a broader 11:30 audience. By promoting Conan and moving Jay, NBC is betting that this broad audience...

...third consecutive action comedy with at least one prehistoric beast. In two weeks, Jack Black and Michael Cera will play the dino-comedy card again with Year One. Sony, the film's distributor, might want to reposition Year One's marketing to emphasize its pedigree as a Judd Apatow comedy (from which The Hangover was clearly spawned), and to sell the primitive wilderness that Black and Cera wander through as Vegas without the neon. And maybe the CGI techies could quickly black out one of Jack's teeth...
