Until the brothers hit the apex of the ad world, no one questioned their claim to have a grand strategy that would turn their empire into a finely tuned global machine. But the first crack in that facade occurred in January 1986, just two months before the purchase of Bates, when longtime finance chief Martin Sorrell departed to start his own agency. Sorrell, who had grown restive as a Saatchi subordinate, has since assembled an agency group, WPP, with annual revenues of $1.2 billion. Close observers of Saatchi & Saatchi date the firm's financial drift from Sorrell's departure. Says...
...apex of his stage career -- in the mid-'40s, when he and Ralph Richardson led the Old Vic company through triumphal seasons in London and New York City -- Olivier could spread out the banquet of those contradictions in a single evening. In Henry IV, Part I, he was the stuttering, heroic Hotspur; in Part II, the cagey-senile Justice Shallow. The curtain would fall on his Oedipus, with its searing scream of self-revelation; after intermission he would mince on as Mr. Puff, the giddy paragraphist of Sheridan's The Critic. It was all part of a 70-year striptease...
...Lawrence was the ultimate epic -- cinema at the apex of its ambition and intelligence. Lavish in visual beauty, the film also boasts economy of style: it knows how much can be shown in a shot, how much can be said in a few words. But the picture was a harbinger too. If Lawrence was the last colonial God-man, he was also the movie epic's first moody hero, father to countless sacred screen madmen. And in the picture's political wrangling and massacre scenes, we see hints of American history in the late '60s and American movies today...
...pilots made three more efforts to shake their pursuers. Each . time, observers in a Navy E-2C radar plane flying nearby heard the Libyan ground controller order the MiG pilots to jink into potential collision courses with the Tomcats. The MiGs normally carry radar-guided Apex as well as heat-seeking Aphid missiles. While the Aphid homes in on a jet's fiery exhaust, the Apex is effective when launched at a target's nose...
That bracing ingenuity marks many of AMMI's exhibits. Nam June Paik's video installation is an automobile frame on which are mounted 65 screens, each strobing scenes of Bonnie and Clyde or Abbott and Costello or any of a hundred other images. AMMI's apex is Tut's Fever, an Egyptian-style movie palace conceived by Artists Red Grooms and Lysiane Luong. Grooms' impish sculptures staff the theater: Theda Bara sits in the box office; Mae West sells you candy; Mickey Rooney is the usher; a sarcophagus creaks open to reveal the late James Dean. In the theater auditorium...
