When Janos came upon Baker on a Paramount sound stage last week, the actor was still in full Pongidaean regalia: from hairy ape costume down to the special contact lenses he wore to simulate the smoky, mysterious eyes of a gorilla. "You need eye contact with a person you're interviewing," says Janos. "And those apelike eyes were chillingly disconcerting." He finally decided to talk with Baker after hours, when they could meet man to man, so to speak. Sighed Baker as his interviewer departed: "Now you know what it must have been like to be King Kong...

...critical darkness indigenous to the movies. On the face of it, nothing could be more preposterous than this story of the love affair between the oddest couple in popular culture: a blonde whose beauty is matched only by her dimness of mind (at least in the original) and an ape who is 40 ft. tall, fierce of mien and manner, yet at heart just a big adolescent, bumbling spectacularly through the throes of his first-often literally crushing-crush. At best it is low camp, at worst a lunacy that should have sent people howling into the night long before...

...depicted, predictably, as brutal lunatics. Superintendent Cobham of the Victorian police (played with flush, fruity menace by Frank Thring) supervises Morgan's eventual capture and execution, then ships his head to an anatomy professor in Melbourne. The professor has a curious theory-he thinks Morgan could be half ape. The superintendent keeps Morgan's scrotum as a souvenir for himself, believing it will make a good conversation piece and a practical tobacco pouch...

Caesar had Cleopatra. Tristan loved Isolde. Romeo died for Juliet. Arthur Fonzarelli (a.k.a. "the Fonz") went ape over Pinky Tuscadero. Flame-haired Pinky (played by Roz Kelly, thirtyish), came roaring into Fonzie's life on her guess-what-color motorcycle for the new season's first two shows of ABC'S hit series Happy Days. Instantly smitten by the shapely Pinky, the self-proclaimed "world's greatest female biker," the Fonz actually bussed her in the bike shop and carried her pink scarf close to his leather-jacketed heart. For a few tense moments marriage loomed...

After a troublesome nine-month gestation, King Kong is alive and well and going through toilet training in Hollywood. The 40-ft. star of Dino De Laurentiis' $22 million ape epic made his public debut at MGM's back lot and, considering that his innards are almost as complex as those of a Polaris missile, the king showed surprisingly few kinks. (The ape whose death was staged last June at Manhattan's World Trade Center for the film's final scene was a Styrofoam stand...
