...Life. During the Stalin era, that hope seemed completely unrealistic. But during the Khrushchev years, the West has slowly, warily concluded that forces of change are at work in the Red world, evidenced by greater emphasis on consumer-goods production, the partial dismantling of the police-state terror apparatus, the parting of the Iron Curtain to permit travel and cultural exchange. From his recent talks with Nikita Khrushchev, Charles de Gaulle brought away a firm impression that Khrushchev now feels compelled to take into account a new fact of life: Soviet public opinion...

...slowed its spin from 136 to 12 revolutions per minute. This strikingly simple trick, like a whirling skater slowing his spin by raising his arms, made photography possible. Two beacon radios called out the satellite's position, reported its inside temperatures and the condition of the apparatus on board. Solar cells topped off the batteries. Nine small instruments observed the bearing of the sun, and another reported the position of the earth's horizon...

Electronic Images. The Tiros' electronic wizardry was accomplished with apparatus designed by the Army's Fort Monmouth scientists, working closely with Radio Corp. of America. Tiros' primary parts are two TV camera tubes, each ½ in. in diameter, that take up to 32 still pictures, one every 30 seconds. The pictures, which are at first electronic images on the tube's screen, can be scanned and transmitted directly, or they can be recorded on magnetic tape. The satellite's masters on earth can tell it what to do. From Fort Monmouth, for example, they...

Eventually, the apparatus was available in the form of a dolphin (rampant), a lion (couchant), or embellished with the "blue magnolia design." ^ In 1900 the Syphonic Closet of the Century was announced. It was clean and decent, but it missed the pungent grandeur of the commode from which Louis XIV announced his forthcoming marriage to Mme. de Maintenon. And it cannot have given its users the satisfaction of the chamber pot, or jerry, available to Britons around 1800, whose interior was limned with a portrait of Napoleon...

...Tuck is sure that the Scylla neutrons came from genuine fusion of deuterium, but he points out that Scylla was never intended to be a practical source of thermonuclear energy. More promising for this purpose is Picket Fence, an apparatus that forms a cavity between strong magnetic fields. When deuterium nuclei are shot into the cavity, they sometimes stay there for 30 millionths of a second, a very long time in thermonuclear physics. Said Dr. Tuck: "For the first time I see in this device faint glimmerings of a possibility of making a thermonuclear reactor...
