Rights Without Forms. The very nature of a world regime of due process assumes that it would not appear overnight as a towering edifice, that it would be built step by difficult step, that it would embrace the principles that are common to nations and compromise the forms of laws which are peculiar. Almost ignored behind the headlines of world crisis is the fact that the U.S. in recent years has taken major steps in contributing to a world legal order...
Possessed by Vengeance. Author White invests each episode with the bladed tension of a poised samurai sword. Though the Japanese never appear, they lurk menacingly just behind the last hill. The major's men achieve grace or disgrace under pressure, but, unfortunately, they are etched in bas-relief-nearly flat characters caught in symbolic or merely arbitrary poses. The book is even shallower when it tries to be most profound, e.g., in suggesting that the major is the compulsive victim of his self-corrupting power when he goes on an irresponsible shooting spree to avenge the killing...
Swing has maintained a tone of righteous indignation; "When a Jap was captured, did we say 'Go home and kiss your wife good-bye'?" Until last year, the census takers counted all workers laid off for 30 days or less as employed. Last year the rules were changed to count such workers as unemployed. In this fashion, the statisticians arbitrarily added another 250,000 to the unemployment totals. While...
Today the Harvard Corporation can dim the most glaring aspect of the "religious controversy." To do so it must reverse what it may regard as a well-established precedent. The decisions which reserved Memorial Church for Christian wedding and funeral services must now appear inconsistent with the role of Harvard as a liberal university and with the role of the church as a memorial to war dead of all faiths. When this issue is resolved the University will be better able to evaluate the larger implications of religion at Harvard...
