...Pakistan rivalry will make its own task in Afghanistan more difficult. Obama therefore called for promoting a rapprochement between India and Pakistan as a key objective of U.S. foreign policy. But he will find few takers in India for continuing a peace process with a government that does not appear to control significant elements of its own military. India will weary of being exhorted to talk to a government that is at best ineffective and at worst duplicitous about the real threats emanating from its territory and institutions...

...there is a system. Amateurs like to bet based on the dog’s name. Sure, “Nitro Diddy” and “MJ’s Go Fast” sound quick and “Get Out Debt” may appear to be a dog for the fiscally responsible. But real pros look deeper in the night’s racing program. They look to the name of the dog’s parents. “Safari Joggins” starts looking a lot better when you see the name...

Yeah, well, the campaign was bemusing. One of the wonderful things about it is the people I've always referred to as "Sabbath gasbags" - the Washington people who appear on television on Sunday - were wrong, I guess, 100% of the time. They were almost never right. There were constant surprises. Who expected any of this stuff? It was only in looking back at it that you realized, hey, at one point this was going to be [Rudy] Giuliani vs. Hillary Clinton...

...excuse the requirement of exams on that day. Students who are campaigning to have over 30 exams moved from that day should not expect that College to grant their wish. If the College made accommodations for students who desire to usher in the Democratic President-elect, it would appear to be a partisan gesture. Were Senator John McCain the man of honor, would there be the same campaign to allow students to attend his inauguration and do exams through make-ups? This concession would seem a sympathetic response to those wanting to support a Democratic success. The College should...
