...public was not privileged to hear the dissenting voices of professional soldiers such as Lieut. General Greg Newbold [April 17] before incompetent civilians like George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney-- and Tony Blair--launched a disastrous war. I pray that in the next presidential election someone will appear to make America a respected and honorable country once again...

...reject insincerity and connect in a genuine way, but the cynic in me expects that the consultants might just offer the following advice after reading Klein's piece: "I've got it: you can't look like a performer. We've got to make you look genuine and appear to connect spontaneously. Let's do a focus group to see if people like genuine emotion. Then we'll find out which emotions resonate with the base, and we can script some spontaneous, emotionally real moments. Can you quote any Aeschylus...

...hawking Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle perfume next year. Moss, 32, the face of the fragrance since 2002, lost modeling contracts with Burberry and H&M last year after a London tabloid ran photos of her allegedly snorting cocaine. But Moss's career is rebounding, and she will appear in an upcoming Calvin Klein campaign with, coincidentally, Knightley's ex, male model Jamie Dornan. Knightley, 21, says she's "thrilled to follow the extraordinary women who have been associated with [Chanel]," like Nicole Kidman and Catherine Deneuve. And, really, who can sniff at that...

...This is, of course, a reassuring - though not necessarily a provable - thought. And the movie cheats a little with the Gornickes. They turn out to be better educated than they appear to be. They have chosen their bus, and their home-schooled children are both smarter and less anxious than the Munro kids. On the other hand, if we are truly an open society, we have to be open to learn to reserve judgment, to entertain the possibility that things (and people) are not necessarily what they seem at first glance to be. That thought sometimes applies to movies...
