...growing desperate, a recent wave of coordinated large-scale attacks--such as the series of bombings that killed at least 30 Iraqis in Baghdad in one day last week--suggests that some rebel groups have become more organized. Videotapes obtained by TIME from sources close to the insurgency appear to confirm the existence of makeshift training camps inside Iraq to teach recruits guerrilla warfare. The camps are tucked inside villages and conduct weapons-handling drills in remote fields. One tape shows four men in uniforms gathered in a dilapidated barracks facility in western Iraq and receiving instruction...
...gamble that, at least initially, did not appear to be paying off. Liberal Democrats immediately charged that the President was slashing the venerable retirement program. Conservatives charged that Bush had signed on to wealth redistribution. And many allies of the White House warned that Bush's very endorsement might galvanize the opposition. The commercial watchers' prior attitudes toward the celebrity influenced how much they liked or disliked the brand, but surprisingly, the celebrity endorsements evoked stronger feelings...
...China, visits from Lien and Soong are no-losers: it gives away nothing but a few rounds of toasts and, in return, gets top Taiwan politicians to come and affirm the goal of eventual unification. Beijing also managed to appear graceful toward its so-called renegade province just six weeks after the passage of an antisecession law that commits it to war if Taiwan declares independence. (Washington was a booster of the Lien visit, but also urged Beijing to "reach out" to President Chen...
