...ways terrifying anecdotes about explorers and the troubles they ran into with cold. Are there any that stick out to you as your favorites? One of my favorite patterns that I think you can see in the Arctic explorers in the 1800s and early 1900s was a very dignified approach to everything they did, even in dying. They were oftentimes amazingly collected in the notes they left behind in their journals. [Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon] Scott is one of the better examples of that. On his return from the South Pole, he was only 15 miles or so from...

Although some previous research had hinted at similar benefits of weight training, the overall lack of rigorous evidence to support it led doctors to take a conservative approach in recommending excess activity. "Because we didn't have strong data one way or another, there was this dictum that translated to, Don't lift anything, or only minimally use your arm," explains Dr. Brian Lawenda, a breast-cancer-radiation specialist at Naval Medical Center San Diego, who was not involved in the new study...

...groups. B told me that I was wrong. Yes, hand etiquette changes every few years, and there are some conventions. But what the greetings are really about is the attention that two friends pay to one another. The idea is to follow your friend's hand carefully as you approach it, making sure that you meet in the same way—shake, snap, slap, or pound. I learned from B that hand manners are like jazz. They are not about exclusion—they are about sympathetic improvisation...
