...promises to maintain social programs threatened by their rivals in the Civic Platform party. Civic Platform advocated radical free-market reforms to slash the budget deficit and jump-start the economy, but voters shied away from these in favor of the Law and Justice Party's more socially oriented approach. Before the vote, the now President-elect told Time he opposed privatization of industries he considered vital to "Polish national security," especially in the energy sector, and that he favored a more "sensitive" economic policy. European Heroes In your wonderful selection of people who deserve to be called European Heroes, you featured Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen [Oct. 10]. That is too much praise for a man who is mainly known for his prevarication and tardy approach to very real problems that affect this city. It is important to realize that in Holland, mayors are appointed by the crown. The good citizens of Amsterdam are thus not allowed to vote for their first citizen, and they instead got a refugee from the political establishment who needed a place to hide. They fell asleep at 3 a.m., but were roused at dawn when Wilma arrived with more than 100 m.p.h. winds. Since Wilma came ashore on Florida's west coast, many had hoped...

Of the girls who climbed, some, in beautiful dresses and expensive accessories, had modeled before. Others were taking a more casual approach, wearing clothes and jewelry they had made with their own hands. Julia K. Clarke ’05 arrived in a home-made Zoolander “Derelicte” tank-top, inspiring the others to shout such encouragements as “Blue Steel...
