...years, much of this decrease resulting directly from AIDS education. But as long as people are putting themselves and others at unecessary risk without a clear awareness of that risk, there is a long road ahead. The Crimson does well to awaken "social concern," but that concern is apt to degenerate into hysteria if it is not guided into a rational and constructive preventative channel. The press, with its great educative power, has a duty to direct that concern into AIDS prevention, rather than abandoning it to become AIDS hysteria. Richard B. Mintz '87 Publicity Coordinator, HR-GLSA

...record album. That version, by French authors, was staged at the 4,500-seat Palais des Sports in Paris in 1980. For the R.S.C., Nunn, Lyricist Herbert Kretzmer and other writers radically refashioned the text. The result is less French than English in tone and idiom, but that seems apt: Hugo's socialistic portraits of the downtrodden but unconquerable poor, and of the implacable forces of law that try to suppress them on behalf of men of property, could have echoed forth from British history as easily as French...

...abandonment of Times Beach was attended by a frenzy of attention from newspapers, which was apt, since the town was created by a newspaper in the first place. The St. Louis Star-Times bought the square mile of flatland wedged between the Meramec River and the highway, and in 1925 sold plots for $67.50 each to anyone who agreed to buy a subscription to the paper (which is now defunct). After World War II it became a regular working-class town. Times Beach, like many Midwestern river settlements, had a tang more Southern than latitude alone could explain...

Students, faculty and staff at Harvard can participate as individuals in the effort to overcome apartheid. As I indicated earlier, each of us can work for appropriate measures in Washington; the campaign for sanctions legislation affords an apt illustration. As suggested by Amnesty International, we can identify and publicize the plight of political prisoners and hence let the South African government know that the welfare of such prisoners is a matter of international concern. We can contribute money for the defense of South Africans whose human rights have been violated. There are even opportunities to go to South Africa...

They were prototypes for Evelyn Waugh's "Bright Young People," the six sisters and a brother who provided a perfect historical metaphor for the fashionable confusions of their class and time. With apt symbolism, the Mitford girls paraded at smart London parties dressed as decadent Roman empresses. When the horses and hounds on their country estate bored them, the Mitfords traipsed abroad, treating Europe as their private playground. As the advancing shadow of World War II put a stop to the fun, they turned their patrician self-assurance to extremist politics. Nancy wrote the inside story in autobiographical novels, while...
