Even admirable attempts to address the stereotypes fall short--if only because a lot of people don't recognize satire. Apu on The Simpsons is a ludicrously drawn character, a heavily accented and mustachioed man who runs a Kwik-E Mart and offers guru-like advice to his befuddled friend Homer (when he is not making his own gauche mistakes). I don't think most Americans even recognize that The Simpsons uses Apu to mock American conceptions of South-Asian Americans...
...life beyond Bart. The scamp was the show's first star; his ripostes ("Eat my shorts") became T-shirt slogans. Bart is still the richest Simpsons character, but the purview has expanded to include all of Springfield, with 50 or so comic figures, from the Kwik-E-Mart's Apu Nahasapeemapetilan to the Kennedyesque Mayor Quimby to Krusty the Clown and his sadistic cartoon cohorts Itchy & Scratchy -- a wonderfully congested cosmos each week...

...India most of its international cinematic acclaim. That is mainly because of Satyajit Ray. Using Calcutta's swirling misery as a background for his low-budget masterpieces, Director Ray depicts Indian life with poignant realism. His famous trilogy, Song of the Road, The Unvanquished, and The World of Apu, has been applauded at film festivals all over the world, as has his more recent Distant Thunder. But Ray's movies are not popular in India. His new release, Jana Aranya, opened unheralded this spring in three obscure Calcutta movie houses...
