...Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea off Nassau and Jamaica, recorded an eye-catching documentary on the difficulties and hazards of making movies below the surface. At one point a huge, uninvited shark swam into the middle of a scene. Cameramen, directors and technicians, wearing light Aqua Lungs and flippers, could swim away, but actors weighted down by 225-lb. costumes could only gesticulate pathetically. The shark eventually got bored and swam away, but Disneymen manufactured a more dramatic finish to the shark's visit and spliced it into 20,000 Leagues...
...life, Hope Root loved the sea. A vigorous, barrel-chested (5 ft. 5 in., 170 lbs.) Miami lawyer, Root spent his spare time in or on the water, fishing, boating and swimming. Three years ago he discovered the new sport of skin diving with an Aqua-Lung. He discovered the thrill of plunging into the dark depths without the clumsy encumbrance of a diving suit, using only a mouthpiece breathing apparatus to equalize the tremendous pressures of the ocean's silent world. Unlike Captain Cousteau, who brought the silent world on to the printed page in a 1953 bestseller...
...danger when the supply of blood oxygen gets thin. Divers fear narcosis. One came back from a record 306 ft. down, and lived to tell about it. Miami's Skin Diver Root determined to learn more. Why take the risks? Said 52-year-old Diver Root: "I'm going to dive for the same reason people climb high mountains. It's a challenge...
Roberta bought a $235 Christian Dior suit of purple faille, Marilyn a $100 strapless aqua cocktail dress with a rhinestone-trimmed jacket, and Eileen a lavender, gold-embroidered blouse and a black velvet skirt. The girls bought $50 blouses. They bought expensive shoes. They bought gloves. They bought piles of lingerie. They bought stockings. They went to a beauty parlor and Roberta became a blonde and Marilyn a redhead. They hurried to the hotel, decked themselves in their finery, and went to the Latin Quarter, a big, gaudily-decorated Broadway nightclub...
...military and naval units, city employees, policemen, firemen and seven bands under limp silk flags-marched up Broadway. In front of City Hall, party bosses, military commanders, the consuls of some 50 foreign nations, City Council President Vincent Impellitteri, the mayor's pretty wife in an aqua velveteen hat, and Bill O'Dwyer arrayed themselves on a hastily constructed platform. Seven policemen and an octogenarian deputy fire commissioner collapsed in the heat. O'Dwyer presented Grover Whalen with a $450 gold medal for "extraordinary public service...
