Collier, 25, of Pittsburg, Calif., is not the only victim of trendy eel-skin accessories. John McCosker, director of San Francisco's Steinhart Aquarium, has received numerous inquiries about a possible connection between eel skin and malfunctioning bank and credit cards, and he believes there may be one. The skins come from the slithery saltwater hagfish, also known as the slime eel. McCosker surmises that the problem is caused by either a metallic left over from the tanning process or some residual goo secreted by the skin. Others say the magnetic clasps on some wallets are the culprits. Whatever...
...example, animal liberationists "freed" two dolphins from a tank in Hawaii. Hours later one of them was briefly spotted foundering on a reef, badly lacerated. Even so, scientists and conservationists are - increasingly interested in readapting captive or injured sea animals to the wilds. Last month the New England Aquarium, with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, organized a successful attempt to return to the ocean three pilot whales that had washed up on a Cape Cod beach. The $150,000 ORCA effort was the first attempt to develop an entire program for retraining captive dolphins for life...
...Robert Lowell hopes that "when shallow waters peter out," he will be able to "catch Christ with a greased worm" and save his soul. The Fisherman notes, "Lowell was a Christian, and he was probably right to resort to the metaphor of fishing for his purpose. Christianity is an aquarium . . . in the fourth century, the cross was not the prevailing symbol for the Man-Fisher; the fish was . . . when ((Jesus)) rose from the dead and went up on the Mount, he took with him only three, all fishermen...
More recent studies suggest other pluses. In a 1984 Philadelphia study of patients about to undergo dental surgery, some were hypnotized, others were told to look at an aquarium full of fish, and the rest sat quietly for 20 minutes. The first two groups experienced the least discomfort. Surprisingly, watching fish was as effective as being hypnotized. Why animals are so soothing is still a mystery. Psychiatrist Aaron Katcher of the University of Pennsylvania speculates that stroking animals and talking to them stimulates < the brain's production of its pleasure chemicals, the endorphins...
