Indeed, the only diehard Middle Eastern nation left on the militant left at the moment is Syria, where the ruling socialist Baath Party clearly feels betrayed by the new look. "Arab revolutionaries cannot fail to note the current reactionary tide in the Middle East," said the chief party newspaper in Damascus last week. ...Mapai Party won 43 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, one more than it had held before the election. With the aid of its traditional allies among the smaller labor, religious and Arab parties, Eshkol should have no trouble when it comes to forming a coalition. Ben-Gurion's Rafi Party, a splinter of the Mapai, formed to challenge Eshkol earlier this year, made a poor showing. Rafi won ten seats, though Ben-Gurion had hoped for 15 or 20.
