...words waxing poetic with nonsense about first-year friendships forged over Annenberg’s Fried Cusk. Or it can lead to a “Fifty Things to Do Before Graduation” piece, which invariably makes asinine suggestions like “Camp out at the Arnold Arboretum,” or “Swim across the Charles,” or, perhaps worst of all, “Attend an Ec-10 Lecture.” Such columns, written under the guise of imparting wisdom to the young, are actually the product of aging minds...
...have also seen the feverish pace of seniors destined to "see it all" in Boston. They have spent four years far from home, not ever going beyond Newbury Street. The Freedom Trail, the Arnold Arboretum, mansions in Newport, R.I.; attractions near and far that they planned to visit evaporated under paper deadlines and piles of reading. Perhaps the most notorious, the Freedom Trail leads through Boston's bastions of revolutionary fervor and architectural masterpieces-it's a history lesson in and of itself (Boston Park Rangers, 1010 Mass. Ave.; 635-7383; tours leave from various sites...

Harvard, in cooperation with the Boston Department of Parks, maintains 265 acres of pure greenery for "research and education." Climbing, anyone? The arboretum, now a National Historical Landmark, is over 115 years old and hosts more than 6,000 different species; to try. Free. Open sunrise to sunset; visitor center open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (517) 524-1718. T-stop: Forest Hills or Arborway...
