...title of Remnick's opus refers to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., the bloody origin point of a tide that swept the first black President into office 44 years later. But it is also an apt name for the story of Barack Obama's arc from youthful ambivalence to adult ambition, his struggle to reconcile his biracial roots and his attempt to build a political identity based on consensus rather than insistence. Remnick, editor of the New Yorker, has written an expansive work, as much an account of the forces that forged Obama's identity and intellect...

...stage it in dance clubs. "In those days, there were these giant mega-clubs in warehouses," he says, "and I thought: what if you put a little stage at one end with a video screen, and you had a series of songs that told a story with an emotional arc to it? When you were there, you'd be dancing and drinking and God knows what, but something would be imparted beyond just the arc of a DJ set. That was the idea, anyway. ...without the connections Ellison would presumably have made between characters and episodes. Trippy visions of talking buzzards and hitching-post men have startling force but seem disconnected from the central story line, and some of Hickman and Sunraider’s extended flashback sequences stall without a strong narrative arc to support them. Nevertheless, the intrigue of these two characters and the vividness of their stories—however disjointed they may be—is more than enough to make “Three Days” engrossing...

...municipalities in the country are remote and lawless areas reminiscent of the Wild West. Settlers struggle for control of land and the small and ill-equipped police officers and justice officials are powerless to stop them. Three of the 10 towns with the highest homicide rates are in the Arc of Deforestation that runs around the Amazon's eastern and southern fringe. "That is closely related to the presence of loggers, slave labor, land grabbers and the local political and economic powers," he says...
