Most Republicans find the idea of raising income taxes anathema -- unless they can get a capital-gains tax cut in exchange. That swap was contemplated during the long-running budget summit, but discarded as politically unfeasible. It resurfaced briefly last week, when Republican Congressman William Archer of Texas claimed that Bush had said "without equivocation" that he supported Archer's plan for lifting the top income tax rate to 31% while slashing the tax on capital gains to 15%. Once again the trade-off was shot down. The main reason: Archer's plan would lower taxes on incomes over...
...little reassurance from Washington, where the House last week rejected the long- negotiated $500 billion deficit-cutting package, triggering a government shutdown and the furloughs of thousands of federal employees. "The government looks like it has lost control of the country," says Dwayne Andreas, chairman of the agricultural conglomerate Archer Daniels Midland...
Other alternative fuels are gaining popularity around the world. In smog- choked Sao Paulo, Brazilian drivers tank up with an ethanol blend that is 78% gasoline and 22% alcohol distilled from sugarcane. According to Illinois- based Archer Daniels Midland, ethanol blends account for 8% of all U.S. motor fuel. The mixture is readily available in parts of the Midwest at stations that display the gasohol symbol, an ear of corn...
Ferruzzi says its purchases -- a reported 30 million bu. of soybeans in the past 18 months -- were a legal effort to ensure adequate supplies for its customers. Many traders believe Ferruzzi's two largest U.S. rivals, Archer Daniels Midland of Decatur, Ill., and Cargill of Minneapolis, felt the pinch from rising prices and complained to the c.b.o.t. Said one trader: "Older, established firms ganged up on the new, foreign kid on the block." With prices taking a near panic dive, Ferruzzi has already lost an estimated $10 million. Harder hit may be U.S. soybean farmers, who last week...
Some firms argue that degradable, not recycled, plastics are a better solution to the waste problem. Archer Daniels Midland claims to have invented a kind of cornstarch additive that makes plastics totally disintegrate when exposed to soil, water or sunlight; currently, no more than 0.5% of all U.S. plastic products are degradable. But for the process to work, a certain amount of moisture must be present in the soil, and critics argue that landfills are not always moist enough for the plastic to break down. Even some trash that deteriorates can take years to do so. Says Jeanne Wirka...
