Almost ethereal, Valencia's Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía stands at the edge of the Mediterranean, its egg-shaped dome looking something like an ocean liner's hull or a spaceship. Designed by leading architect and native son of the city Santiago Calatrava, the building is a gleaming composition: curved walls, rolling stairways; turquoise reflecting pools topped by a detached, feather-like roof. But the Palau is more than an architectural masterpiece. An opera house that cost in the neighborhood of €325 million to build, it is also the riskiest element in the city's gamble...

...dishes she purveys at weddings and bar mitzvahs. Benign neglect on the part of her mother strikes one as excellent option. But Keaton's Daphne is an up-and-doing sort of person and she's soon trolling the Internet for suitable mates, coming up with an architect called Jason (Tom Everett Scott), who is a little bit too tightly wound. She conducts her interviews with dating prospects in a restaurant under the amused eye of Johnny, the restaurant's guitar player (Gabriele Macht). His only visible defect is a tattoo on his hand. ...days, more than a hundred volunteers at Ocean Breeze Elementary School sawed wood, dug holes, hammered nails and tightened bolts. Come nightfall, they still toiled, aided by a fire truck's flood-lights. At the hub of the commotion, sagging tool belt at waist and diagrams in hand, was Architect Robert Leathers, 45, the Johnny Appleseed of the swing set. Over the past 15 years, Leathers has helped thousands of volunteers erect nearly 350 playgrounds in 24 states, ranging from pocket-size parks to a 1½-sq.-mi. recreation area, complete* with a 600-seat amphitheater, in Romulus...

Leathers, whose boyhood passion for multistory treehouses led him to become an architect, stumbled into the swing-and-slide business in 1970, when he helped build a play area for his children's school in Ithaca, N.Y. That effort took 15 weekends, but the community spirit engendered by the all-volunteer project exhilarated Leathers so much that he made it a specialty of his practice. Today six of his associates work fulltime on designing and building playgrounds, which generally go up in four or five days and cost anywhere from $2,500 to $45,000, about one-third the usual...

...idyllic, 1,800-m-high Swiss hamlet of Arosa wasn't already alluring enough, the addition of a sprawling $28 million spa makes it irresistible. Bergoase is the latest work of homegrown architect Mario Botta, whose commissions have included San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art and Milan's new-look La Scala opera house. The spa features sail-like steel-and-glass skylights, pictured, employs granite in abundance and is attached by a dramatic glass bridge to the recently renovated Tschuggen Grand Hotel. "I wanted the structure to have a deep, instant and intense bond with its surroundings," Botta...
