...declining to nominate him as a candidate in Israel's prime ministerial election on February 6. That's good news for Barak, whose supporters have been pleading with Meretz to support the prime minister so as to avoid splitting the peace camp, although the strength of the challenge by arch-dove Peres bodes ill for Barak's efforts to regain the confidence of an electorate that had, only eight months ago, handed him a landslide victory over Benjamin Netanyahu. There also appears to have been some horse-trading going on, with Peres having been offered "a senior position in accord...

...like perfume - they should be smelled, but not swallowed. Israeli voters tend to vote against rather than for candidates, and the numbers supporting supreme dove Peres may be an expression of unhappiness over Barak's performance in the peace process. But given a stark choice between Sharon, an arch-hawk nicknamed "The Bulldozer," and Barak, skeptical doves will probably follow Meretz's lead and back the prime minister. ...deeper question goes to Putin's motive. After all, with both Gusinsky and his arch-rival oligarch Boris Berezovsky in de facto exile, the president would appear to have disposed of two of his most significant enemies in the battle for Russian public opinion. Then again, if the object is a full-blown political and corporate takeover, or takedown, of Gusinsky's media empire, then exile may not have been enough. The next move may belong to a Spanish court, but the real mystery is Putin's wider game plan. And as ever with the poker-faced president...

...Feeney isn't exactly quaking in his boots. Known as a sharp-witted, backslapping arch-conservative - think Tom DeLay with a winning personality - he's a hard charger who only snickers when he gets blasted in the papers. He was also Jeb Bush's running mate in his failed 1994 gubernatorial race - and his hard-right ideology was widely implicated in the loss. But if Feeney is afraid of playing the same p.r. albatross to Jeb's brother, he doesn...
