...bewildered father figure; a fine actor, he risks being typecast as a comic butt or supporting disposable. Witherspoon does an entertaining act as the '90s bad girl who begins by changing the Pleasantville world and ends by discovering that changes in herself may be in order. If her character arc is less convincing than her brother's, it's worth viewing, like the visuals, as part of the allegory rather than a realistic pattern...

...Velazquez, nor a Titian. An American Picasso, maybe? No: the oeuvre lacks that vast span. For someone who had the impact on international art that he did, Pollock had a bafflingly short career. He didn't attain any degree of originality until after his 30th birthday. The arc of the career rises from 1943, when the collector and gallery owner Peggy Guggenheim commissioned him to paint a mural for her Manhattan apartment, to the early '50s--no more than 10 years. Unlike the political audience in Worcester, the crowd at Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard was ensconced in a church and used to the dramatic arc of a sermon--of sin and repentance. It was a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 March on Washington, and there to introduce Clinton was Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, an authentic hero of the civil rights movement. The hours before were filled with conference calls about Russia and the impending Northwest Airlines strike, and as Clinton was riding to the chapel...

...arc of the story, adapted from a short novel by the Honore de Balzac, follows a soldier named Augustin Robert (Ben Daniels) who is sent to Egypt in 1798 as the guide and protector of Jean-Michel (Michel Piccoli) an important artist/historiographer. Jean-Michel is on an official mission to draw, measure and document the cultural landmarks of the Egyptian dunes. Of course, the military party with whom he travels are little concerned with monuments or cave-drawings. They have been yanked from their homes and families to conduct a miserable campaign against the Mameluke Dynasty, marching around the desert...
