Wireless reports, coming in every few days from mid-Atlantic, keep the world in touch with the progress of the scientific expedition of the New York Zoological Society, under William Beebe, which is adventuring in the Sargasso Sea aboard the wooden steamer Arcturus. Few scientific expeditions, excepting only the Carnarvon progress into the tomb of TutankhAmen, have had so much and such continued publicity during the progress of work...
Beebe reported continuous rough weather. He described taking his first specimens of marine surface-walking insects-a Sargassum fish with fins like hands-and a mass of its eggs which are now hatching in the aquarium of the Arcturus. In spite of the weather, bottom dredging was possible to a depth of three miles. A half-inch cable, containing seven strands of 19 wires each (133 wires in all), was paid out from the drums for three hours, while the steamer drifted in the trough of the swell. The steamer proceeded at about three knots an hour. It then required...
...Arcturus has had rough voyaging all the way, from New York to Newport News, from Newport News to Bermuda (which was touched on Feb. 19) and since then at sea. Considerable breakage of crockery resulted; the heavy seas prevented deep sea trawling to bring up the little monsters from great depths. These live under such great pressure that they usually burst when brought to the surface because their high inward pressure, developed to meet the great weight of the water of the depths, cannot endure when they are lifted to the low pressure of the surface...
They build ships of steel nowadays; some of them approach 1,000 feet in length and 60,000 tons in displacement. But the little steamer Arcturus that slipped out of New York Harbor, last week, is built of wood, is less than 300 feet in length and not 2,500 tons in displacement. Yet she went forth on what promises to be a great voyage...
...company went forth at the in stance of the Department of Tropical Research of the New York Zoological Society. The Arcturus, equipped for deep-sea fishing, has a drum and seven miles of cable, with trawls to catch fish at various depths. One of the chief objects of this Odyssey is to catch the self-illuminated deep-sea fish, the little monsters of the great depths. Dr. Beebe has expressed hope of capturing a giant squid, one of the great octopi with tentacles many feet in length. Scars which these sucking tentacles have left have been found on whales' sides...
