Nancy Wickwire is a beautiful and compelling Roxane; but she should look older at the end, for Rostand jumped ahead 15 or 16 years here, as Shakespeare had done in A Winter's Tale. Michael Higgins is excellent as the ardent but inarticulate Christian; he can convey earnestness as well as anyone in the company. Michael Lewis is a strong and brusque Comte de Guiche. Sorrell Booke makes a lovable Ragueneau, the baker whose heart lies in trying to write verse rather than in selling pastry (did anyone ever better deserve the name of poetaster?). And there are other laudable...

...write-in campaign, has held it since, despite mighty organization efforts to dislodge him. Nominated for governor a second time at last week's Republican convention in Roanoke, he found the campaign's blazing segregation issue already forced on him. As a hedge against integration, the Byrdmen -ardent states'-righters on the national scene-centralized all public-school pupil placements in Richmond, withheld state funds from any school district that defies the state by mixing races. Like other moderate segregationists, Lawyer Dalton believes in district-by-district supervision, a plan that would inevitably admit some Negro students...

...Ascot, on a fashionable beach at Cannes, at a lavish masquerade ball in Venice, or amidst panoplies of Oriental splendor as devoted followers balanced his weight in gifts of diamonds, gold or platinum on Moslem feast days. Readers of the sports page knew the Aga Khan as an ardent turfman whose stables had produced five Derby winners. (The day before his death, a thoroughbred named Damseesa, carrying his flashy red and green silks, romped home an easy 14 to 1 winner at Paris' Le Tremblay.) Gossipists eagerly followed his own progress through four marriages, and the gaudier romances...

Melville Cooper has a wonderfully sheepish face for the role of the chief thief, and is hilarious in his series of outrageous disguises. The roles of his proteges, the ardent Hector and the morose Gustave, are well entrusted to Lawrence Spector and John Reese. Guy Sorel makes the most of his mainly silent role as the hen-pecked Lord Edgard. David Bauer is properly reserved as the older Dupont-Dufort; and the endomorphic slob the latter sired is highly amusing in the hands of Tom Bosley...

William Ewart Gladstone, his more ardent admirers were to become convinced, had been sent to earth to trounce the foul Tory fiend Benjamin Disraeli, to be four times Liberal Prime Minister of Britain and, finally, to translate God's blunt, muttered injunctions into eloquent sentences of interminable length. History records William's success in all these spheres, but it bypasses his extraordinary wife. Catherine was such an attractive woman that even Queen Victoria, who came to loathe Gladstone, almost forgave her for being his wife. Every morning, when they were at their favorite country house, the Gladstones walked...
