...ardent activist atheist, I second David Van Biema's proposal to add the Bible to the curriculum of our public high schools. I do so for the same reason I support teaching English, keyboarding and the U.S. Constitution: each is useful knowledge for informed citizens in a democracy. My only caution: teach all of the Bible. We wouldn't sample bits and pieces of Macbeth, Jane Eyre, 1984 or Catch-22 in a literature class; we would expect students to read an entire work. Just so with the Bible. ...Right to Decide in Mexico are beginning to tap into what they insist is closeted doubt among Latin American Catholics about whether a fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy is a bona fide human life. They are also exploiting popular resentment against the Latin American Church's ardent opposition to contraception and other safeguards that could help avoid the need for abortions. With Abe you can't understand what his intentions are." At the same time, Koizumi's most ardent fans-especially the young, unaffiliated voters he lured back into politics-reject Abe as a conservative relic. "His popularity has fallen because he's not perceived as being radical enough," says Robert Feldman, chief Japan economist for Morgan Stanley. Feldman argues that Abe has actually been a much more aggressive...

...Gaza, weary of their humiliations and broken hopes, have risen up to disturb Israel's birthday party, its sometime peace and its dream. For 2,000 years the thought of Zion warmed the minds of the world's scattered Jews. ''Next year in Jerusalem'' -- the prayer ended in an ardent sigh. The trajectory of that yearning was launched endlessly from shtetl and ghetto in the wilderness of the Diaspora. At last, 40 years ago the arc of the desire was completed, the dream implanted in history. Israel, thought David Ben-Gurion, would be a ''light unto the nations...
