...leaked the letter? Early speculation centered on Richard Perle, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy and the Administration's most ardent critic of arms control. Perle flatly denied that he was the source of the leak. Defense Department officials pointed out that the leaked letter bore Weinberger's nickname signature "Cap," while the copies distributed to Perle and others in the Pentagon were unsigned: the implication was that it was leaked after receipt elsewhere in the Government. Squeezed into eight relatively succinct hours, Arthur Hopcraft's adaptation tidies up the sprawling novel a bit. One regrets the loss of a few of Dickens' colorful minor characters, along with much of his humor. Then he scrambled into a pickup truck and peered through a nightscope to watch his agents tear through the chaparral in Dodge Ram Charger "war wagons" to overtake groups of Mexicans trying to sneak into the U.S. Later, he proudly counted the day's total arrests: 2,643 illegal immigrants. Nudging a companion, Ezell declared...

...Governor. A former FBI agent, the soft-spoken and methodical Lucas was a Democrat when elected sheriff and then executive of Wayne County, which includes Detroit. He drew praise and criticism alike for cutting the county debt by laying off workers and selling a financially hemorrhaging public hospital. An ardent supporter of Ronald Reagan's, he switched parties 17 months ago, calling the G.O.P. the true party of opportunity...
