There was something more to Mantle, something all of us picked up from his most ardent admirers--his teammates. They would watch him come into the clubhouse (sometimes after a late night drinking), tape his legs from buttocks to ankle, then go out and hit tape-measure homers. Unlike the aloof Joe DiMaggio, whom he replaced at center, Mantle was generous and funny and self-effacing. Even in 1961, when he and Roger Maris were chasing Babe Ruth's home-run record, Mantle was supportive of Maris. "I'll always be a Yankee," he once said, and indeed, he followed...

...Republicans back in power on Capitol Hill also brought big gains for the antiabortion movement--at least 35 seats in the House and five in the Senate. They can now claim a majority in each house on many abortion-related questions. ...Bush is bemused by a few of the people cheering him. He is a little uncomfortable with praise from the New York Times, and he distances himself from House Democrats ardent for gun restrictions. "I've got to be careful about who I get in bed with," he said last week, chuckling. "I got a call telling me that the Democratic Senate Conference had given me a round of applause...
