...That's not to say there aren't bright spots. Industrial jobs and residents disappeared from the Tennessee city of Chattanooga in the 1980s, but thanks to a local task force, its downtown stands revitalized, with newly created hospitality and leisure sector jobs boosting employment and income levels far more quickly than in comparable cities through the '90s. Elsewhere in the U.S. old industrial towns seem keen to learn, at least. Greater Ohio, a network of groups working to revitalize cities in the state, recently ordered 60 copies of the LSE's guide to distribute to local city mayors...
...even banks on more solid financial footing and those that sell themselves on qualities other than high rates are finding they have to keep up. "People who bank with us aren't going to bank with us because we're the highest rate on the street, but if we're too much under the market, at some point they'll leave," says Steve Andrews, president and CEO of the Bank of Alameda. The San Francisco Bay Area bank has been forced to keep rates artificially high, Andrews says, as one flailing competitor after another - IndyMac, Washington Mutual, Downey Savings & Loan...
...problems with all this is that in many cases the firms most aggressively competing for deposits aren't taking the money and lending it out but are instead holding on to it to buttress their balance sheets. That would be odd, since Salkin noted that a Grievances application is available to Festivus observers on Facebook, where a number of member groups exist for celebrants. "I don't know how active it is, though," he said. He did have one suggestion for anyone who craved Festivus for their iPhone: You can buy the audio version of his book on the iTunes Music Store...
Many huge crowds passed into stores without incident on Black Friday. "Disney World does this every day," notes Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. "People aren't inherently interested in hurting each other." But managing crowds is not something people do well without knowledge and training. Mulvey says that his department met with local retailers, including Wal-Mart, two weeks before Black Friday to remind them that they needed to provide their own security. "We patrol the parking lot, the exteriors, but each individual store is responsible for their own security," says Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone...
