The inner cities give evidence to this neglect. Drugs threaten to make life unliveable for millions of ordinary people who fear to walk down the street in their neighborhoods. AIDS, poverty and homelessness are related problems that have been overlooked and imperil the lives of many Americans.
Sexism on campus and in the class-room are the most widely cited problems that undergraduate women at the University face, according to the results of a survey taken by the Radcliffe Union of Students (RUS).
"One in five children in this country lives in poverty: half of those are in long-term poverty," said Kennedy School of Government Lecturer in Public Policy Olivia Golden '76. Even worse, she said, is the fact that since 1985 the nation ranks 19th in infant mortality worldwide.
Among those proposals are an awareness week for women's issues, a new women's center, more gender sensitivity in course material and more female appointments to the faculty.
"Tens of thousands of people have been killed. Not only the six Jesuits, but also the women from the U.S., the workers...All of these people who are known to us through the TV and the newspapers are really deeper symbols of the people of El Salvador," Hollenbach added.
